Reconstruction in the North and the
Compromise of 1876

    During this seminar, Boston College’s Dr. David Quigley, author of Second Founding: New York City, Reconstruction, and the Making of American Democracy, will lead a discussion on the Compromise of 1876 and the effects of the end of Reconstruction on northern industry. This seminar will take place at the Andover Historical Society where teachers will be introduced to the Shawsheen Historic District- a 19th century planned industrial community.

Parking
Parking is available in the Municipal Lot in downtown Andover. The rate is $1 every four hours. Parking is also available at four hour meters along Main Street.

Using ESSEX History will address four core themes in American history. These four themes are listed below. Teachers will find materials that relate to specific topics linked to the appropriate heading. Any subjects that relate to more than one theme will be linked to all of the appropriate headings.
