    • Using ESSEX History is excited to be able to introduce teachers to Dr. John Stauffer, Professor of English and American Literature at Harvard University. Stauffer will discuss the ways in which Douglass and Lincoln each rose from humble beginnings to become tranformative figures in nineteenth century America. In telling the stories of Douglass' and Lincoln's lives, Stauffer offers a new way of thinking about American History.

Follow Rte 128 N To Exit 25A (Rte 114 East-Salem). Follow the 114 East Signs. From Exit 25A travel approx. 2.3 miles on Rte 114. Pass Hess Gas Station / HMA Car Care on the left. Continue straight, up over the overpass. Take first right, marked Rte 107, Beverly. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Bridge St. At the traffic light at the intersection, turn right onto Washington St. Take the first left you can, which is Church St. The Lyceum is the second building on the right, #43 There is a small parking lot on the same side of the street, and also diagonallly across the street (take the first left at the end of the street after you pass the Lyceum and then the first left again to enter the lot on far side).

Using ESSEX History Themes

Using ESSEX History will address four core themes in American history. These four themes are listed below. Teachers will find materials that relate to specific topics linked to the appropriate heading. Any subjects that relate to more than one theme will be linked to all of the appropriate headings.
